NOTE: All reading lists are for the grade you will be entering in the fall of 2011
Dear Parent/Guardian:
There is much evidence that suggests that the more children read, “ the better their fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension”(National Reading Panel’s 2000 Report), skills that are becoming increasingly
important in the 21st century.
Summer reading provides an excellent opportunity for students to enhance literacy skills developed during the school year and to increase their knowledge. Hopefully, your child’s reading during the summer months will also reinforce positive life‐long habits and provide an opportunity for relaxation
and independent learning.
With these goals in mind, the Lee Middle and High School English Department has prepared a summer reading list and assignment for each grade level. The utmost care has been taken to prepare lists with a large variety of books appropriate for your child’s grade level, but parents are urged to review the titles
with their children and make choices together. The lists and assignments are also available on the Lee Middle and High School website.
The summer reading does not require that you purchase any books. Books can be borrowed from a public lending library; if it is not on the shelf, any librarian will be happy to obtain it for you. For families who prefer to purchase books, buying used copies can be a good, low‐cost option. In addition, Lee’s own bookstore, Main Street Books, has generously agreed to carry or can order our suggested books and offers a 15% discount. You need only mention that you are a LMHS family to receive the discount.
Here’s to a happy, restful summer, filled with reading and all other good things.
Sincerely,
Mr. Marty J. McEvoy
