Welcome to the Lee Elementary School physical education page! We have had a wonderful experience with your children so far this year. We introduced many educational, fun, and interesting activities and are beginning some new and exciting units for the winter (including basketball, yoga, dance, and hockey!) Please remember to have your children wear sneakers on their Physical Education days!
Thank you for visiting our page - don't forget to check out our links to see what we do in the gym throughout the school year! Also, we urge you to get outside with your families at least an hour every day for some good exercise!
Healthy Eating / Activity Tracker
By clicking on the link on the right titled "activity tracker" you will be able to print out a copy of the Fuel Up to Play 60 healthy eating and activity tracker and have your child track their healthy eating and activity time! This is a great way to see how your child is spending idle time and to focus on what they are eating throughout the day!
The Heartbeat
Our newsletter, The Heartbeat, is now on our website! Click the link on the right side of the page to view our latested edition!
Development
Within the physical education curriculum we stress five areas that are important to having a healthy body. They are: Exercise every day, eat healthy food, have good hygiene, get enough rest every night, and try to live in a smoke free environment.
When students enter fourth grade we separate girls and boys and introduce growth and development on a more gender specific level. Fifth graders are requested to anonymously write any growth and development questions they may have onto a piece of paper and we meet with them (separately) to show a growth and development film and answer their anonymous questions. The fifth grade film is called Always Changing and boys view the boys' version and girls watch the female portion. Sixth graders again write questions and we show the Always Changing video of growth and development for both boys and girls.
Fifth and Sixth grade's presentation is for 90 minutes. Keith Thomson, physical education and health teacher from LMHS is our speaker for the boys, while Mrs. Carlino and Mrs. Warner speak to the girls. We are also fortunate to have our school nurse, Mrs. Naventi, participate fully in this process. Mrs. Duhon, 6th grade teacher, is also a big help.
Afterschool
After school programs are funded by the Lee Public Schools and taught by Janet Warner. The programs last 8 weeks, are free of charge, and are divided up into 2 groups kindergarten-2nd grade and grades 3-6. The K-2 group will meet on Mondays for 1 hour and the focus of the program is cardiovascular fitness. It also teaches some nutritional facts and the children are encouraged to eat healthy foods as well. The 3-6 group meets on Fridays for 1 hour and they play floor hockey and volleyball. It is a recreational program, where all students are placed on a team every week for pick up games. It is an opportunity for some great exercise and social interaction. Dates for 2012: Grades K-2: Feb. 6, 13, 27, March 5, 12, 19, 26, April 2 Grades 3-6: Feb. 10, 17, March 2, 9, 23, 30, April 6. Registration forms will be sent home at the beginning of January.
Morning Fitness
The Morning Fitness Program will be offered Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from April 9th to the end of the school year. We will meet from 7:45-8:15 and work on personal fitness through walking, jogging, and fitness excercises. Registration forms will be sent home toward the end of February. A big thank you to the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation for suporting this program with new pedometers!
Dairy Day
May 23 will be "Dairy Day" at Lee Elementary School! Funded by a grant from Fuel Up to Play 60 all students will have the opportunity to sample yogurt parfaits, be provided with free milk during snack, and be treated to a guest speaker from High Lawn Farm to talk about the process that farmers go through to get the milk from the farm to them, and the importance of calcium in their diets!
